What is it?
The YMCA Press Gallery program is an opportunity for young people (aged between 16-25) currently studying, or who have an interest in political journalism, photography and/or filming/editing to gain valuable experience serving as the Press Gallery for the Youth Parliament of Victoria program.
Press Gallery participants will be given access to a range of training opportunities from experts in the journalism industry, developing skills that are highly sought in journalists. Participants will also be given the opportunity to meet and network with professional Victorian and national journalists.
Press Gallery members have had articles successfully published in a range of media outlets, such as the ABC online, the Bendigo Advertiser and the Wangaratta Chronicle and appeared regularly on SYN FM.
How does it work?
Participants of the Press Gallery program will act as the Victorian Parliamentary Press Gallery throughout the lead up and during the Youth Parliament program. They will conduct interviews with Members of Parliament and Youth Parliament participants, and write articles for publication in the lead up to the Youth Parliament program.
During the three sitting days of Youth Parliament, the group will work intensively in the chambers of Parliament House. This will include developing and publishing articles on the program/issues being debated for print and online media outlets, interviewing participants and managing social media.
Participants will also be responsible for producing and editing footage of debates, and photographing participants during speeches and at Youth Parliament functions.
